THE DREAM
Difference

At DREAM, we’ve always known that transformation isn’t just about what we do - it’s about how we do it.

That’s the DREAM Difference.

Dear friends,

At DREAM, we’ve always known that transformation isn’t just about what we do - it’s about how we do it. That’s the DREAM Difference. It’s believing, unequivocally, that every child can thrive when given the right opportunities, and then backing that belief with bold action. Our Grow the Whole Child model - which combines rigorous academics with social-emotional learning, health and wellness support, and deep family partnerships - isn’t just an educational approach. It’s a commitment to ensuring our kids have the resources and support they need to reach their full potential — because that’s what equity demands. 2024 has proven the power of this approach, with our students achieving the highest test scores in our network’s history, demonstrating that when you combine high expectations with comprehensive support, extraordinary results follow.

As we opened the doors to our newest school building and launched our ambitious strategic plan, “Bending the Arc,” we’re setting our sights on an even bolder future. The DREAM Difference is about seeing the full potential in every child who walks through our doors - whether they’re one of the 26% of our students with special needs, or among the 63% who will be first-generation college students. We’re making the long-term investments needed to support not just their academic success, but their complete development from age 4 to 24. That’s how we’re building toward a just future where every single child, from every single zip code, can influence and lead generational change. That’s the DREAM we’re making a reality, every single day.

Summer Impact

Every summer for more than thirty years, DREAM has offered extensive programming to prevent summer learning loss and advance student achievement. Our extended-day, extended-year model has allowed us to address academic gaps and set our students up for success for the school year. This past summer, our 5-week summer program was available across our three school sites in East Harlem and the South Bronx and focused on academic instruction, social-emotional learning, and health and wellness.

The Dream Community

The vibrant neighborhoods of East Harlem and the South Bronx have shaped DREAM’s story since our founding. These communities are filled with cultural richness as multigenerational families create deep roots and small businesses reflect the entrepreneurial spirit of our neighbors. Our young, dynamic population drives positive change every day, proving that zip code does not define destiny. This is where DREAM was born, and this is where we continue to grow – in communities whose potential matches the dreams of our students.

But our community also faces challenges like high poverty rates, housing issues, and poor education outcomes. This reality makes our whole child model all the more important.

The Dream
Difference

In 2024, we saw the DREAM Difference come to life for more students than ever before as we served 2,200 students across 7 schools in East Harlem and the Bronx as well as 400 alumni.

Guided by our maxim All Kids Can. This Kid Can—the core belief that every kid has unlimited potential and deserves to realize their dreams, we welcomed kids from the most underserved communities and backgrounds, where nearly a third of DREAM students have identified special needs, a higher percentage than other NYC charter schools and public schools.

Our Grow the Whole Child Model aims to holistically meet the needs of our students across four interconnected pillars: rigorous academics; social-emotional learning; commitment to family and community engagement; and physical and mental wellness.

What does this look like? It looks like kindergarteners going on college trips. It’s access to extracurriculars like dance, the arts, music, basketball, and taekwondo. It’s scratch food prepared on site for breakfast, lunch, and snack. It’s 600 hours of free after-school programs and 300 hours of free summer programs each year. It’s mental health professionals available at all grade levels. It’s alumni landing internships at Fortune 500 companies. It’s walking with alumni through their post-secondary journeys for up to six years after high school graduation.

That’s the DREAM Difference—a bold reimagining of education that delivers comprehensive, wraparound support to every child, changing the trajectory of not just lives, but entire generations.

The Pillars of Dream’s Whole Child Model

01. Rigorous Academics

DREAM’s critically conscious curriculum aims to prepare young people who engage, learn, apply, and reflect. Our scholars consistently outperform city and state peers, building lifelong skills and habits that help them excel in their post-secondary pathways.

Our Approach

State Test Achievement Results

For the second year in a row, DREAM Charter School outperformed district, city, and state schools in the 2023-24 school year. DREAM’s commitment to all youth is evident in these remarkable outcomes - as DREAM achieved these results while serving a higher percentage of students with special needs than the city average – 27% compared to NYC’s 21%. These results prove that our students are our greatest strength.

DREAM achieved these results while growing overall student enrollment by 350 students and backfilling every vacant seat.

Jenia’s Story

As a young girl, Jenia found herself in East Harlem after her mother brought her to the United States from the Dominican Republic. When she joined DREAM (then Harlem RBI) in middle school for softball, Jenia learned that the ball was not, in fact, “soft,” but she also gained community through lifelong friends and mentors who taught her to take risks, try new things, and to dream big.

After college, Jenia felt lost in figuring out what she wanted to do. She knew she wanted to give back and wanted to be like the mentors who supported her at DREAM. Soon after, with encouragement from DREAM’s Legends (alumni) staff, she joined DREAM’s Teaching Fellowship and became a 3rd-grade teacher.

Last year, Jenia was working alongside her co-teacher Hamdi. Many of her students started the year below grade level in both reading and math. Over the course of the year, with dedication and care, the two led their third-grade class to become DREAM’s highest performers on the New York State Tests! Today, Jenia is giving back every day in her classroom, where she is nurturing and preparing the next generation for success.

01. Rigorous Academics

02. Social-Emotional Learning

School should be a place where students can develop both critical thinking skills and empathy. DREAM’s Grow the Whole Child model is rooted in social-emotional learning, which helps children understand and respond to emotions - aiding their development into individuals who have positive identities, healthy relationships, and the ability to manage adversity.

portrait of ravik

Ravik’s Story

Ravik’s DREAM story began before he was even born. His mother, Raven, was one of the first girls to play on the Field of Dreams in East Harlem. Now a senior at DREAM Charter High School, Ravik’s own journey illustrates the transformative power of deep, enduring relationships. Last basketball season, when he found himself benched during a crucial two-point loss because of his low GPA, it became a pivotal moment. “I knew I could’ve made a difference if I was out there,” Ravik reflects, “and I never wanted to feel like that again.”

But at DREAM, no student navigates challenges alone. Through individual counseling sessions that helped him manage frustration, teachers who provided one-on-one academic support tailored to his learning style, and mentors like Coach James, who saw his potential both on and off the court, Ravik found his path forward. The comprehensive support system – from morning basketball workouts with DREAM alumni to life-changing experiences like studying abroad in Colombia – taught him more than just emotional regulation; it showed him what it means to be part of something bigger than himself. “When I fail or fall short – and someday, when I make it – I know my DREAM family will be there every step of the way,” says Ravik. “Just like they always have been.”

02. Social-Emotional Learning

03. Health & Wellness

DREAM invests in the mental and physical health of our students. We offer free, nationally recognized after-school and summer sports-based programs that help our scholars become confident, competent, and caring community members who know what it means to be part of a team. DREAM also provides robust in-school physical activity and mental health support services. Most recently in 2023, DREAM decided to launch a new scratch food program to bring fresh and healthy meals to our students.

The Scratch Food Program

Our Response

As a direct response to the challenges our community face regarding food insecurity, we launched our Scratch Food program to provide healthy, delicious meals to our students and community every day. We know that food is proven to have a direct impact on student achievement and their short and long-term success in school and life. Through this program, we’ve increased participation in our school lunch program by 31% and our families report high satisfaction with the options.

At DREAM, our Scratch Food program provides freshly prepared breakfast, lunch, and snacks to our students daily. This year, we took it a step further with the creation of our Culinary Club, where students can learn to cook, explore new foods, and build teamwork skills in the kitchen.

Meet two of our founding club members, Hanji and Jaslyn. When Hanji joined DREAM’s new Culinary Club, he was pretty confident in his cooking skills – after all, he was already the family chef for his brothers at home. “I thought I was doing it the best way,” he laughs, remembering his first lesson in knife skills, “but then I learned how to actually cut.” Meanwhile, Jaslyn signed up thinking about college prep. Growing up in a Hispanic household where cooking was central to family life, she wanted to be ready for life on campus.

Together, they’ve found something unexpected in the afternoon cooking sessions with Chef Dan Giusti, former Head Chef of Noma and Founder and CEO of Brigaid. Whether they’re prepping fruit salads for pre-gym fuel or cautiously tasting Chef Dan’s midnight spaghetti with anchovies (“We didn’t want to try it at first, but I really liked it!” Hanji admits), the Culinary Club has become about more than just cooking. For these students, it’s about teamwork, communication, and discovering new passions. Jaslyn, who plans to study pre-law, has learned that “closed mouths don’t get fed” – both in the kitchen and in life. And Hanji? He’s still set on becoming a basketball player, but now he’s planning to keep cooking on the side. “DREAM really cares for students,” he says. “I didn’t have opportunities like this before DREAM.”

03. Health & Wellness

04. Family & Community Engagement

DREAM’s families are critical partners. From home visits to daily communication, families and school staff actively work together and share decision-making. We support our families outside the classroom too, with resources that have ranged from food distributions and clothing drives to direct financial support and case management.

Angelica and Craig’s Story

In September, we opened our doors to a new, permanent home for DREAM Highbridge in the South Bronx. The building is a shining example of what our community deserves – a beautiful place for young people to learn, play, and grow. DREAM Highbridge currently serves grades K-2 and grade 6. The campus will continue to grow, adding grades each year until it serves students from Pre-K through 8th grade.

Craig is a second grader at DREAM Highbridge. Craig’s mom was looking for a school that could support her son as he navigated some big emotions. At DREAM, Angelica discovered something extraordinary – a culture of care that made both Craig and her feel known, seen and loved. The founding staff took time to understand Craig deeply – observing his behavior, learning his triggers, and developing support strategies even before his official IEP (Individualized Education Program) was in place. “I walk by five other schools every day on my way to DREAM,” Angelica reflects, “And I choose DREAM because of how secure I feel, knowing that my child is going to get the help he needs.”

Supporter Spotlight

Katzman

Katzman exemplifies what it means to be true partners in DREAM's mission. For years, they've supported DREAM students and families through innovative programming, career pathways for DREAM Legends, and transformative financial commitments.

Stefanie Katzman, CEO of Katzman, joined DREAM's Board of Directors three years ago, has helped forge creative ways to support DREAM families beyond traditional giving. This year, Katzman launched a unique monthly initiative to donate fresh produce to every DREAM student. More than just providing food, Stefanie visits classrooms personally to conduct nutrition education, introducing students to new flavors like dragon fruit and golden berries. This hands-on approach to food education complements their annual contribution to DREAM's End-of-Year Food Distribution, which provides fresh produce to 300 of our most in-need families – a crucial support for a community where many students receive the majority of their daily calories at school.

The company's commitment extends to every aspect of DREAM's work, from its annual investments in capital projects and general operating support to sponsoring summer teams and showing up at every community event. “Katzman doesn't just respond to needs—they anticipate them,” says DREAM’s Chief Advancement Officer Maria Griffin. “Their creative approach to partnership has transformed how we support our students' health and wellness.”

OIC

For over seven years, OIC has exemplified how an investment firm can create lasting impact through deep community engagement. What began as personal support from Founder Nazar Massouh has evolved into a holistic partnership that combines corporate philanthropy, employee engagement, and hands-on volunteering to support DREAM's mission.

OIC's commitment is multifaceted and creative. The firm has consistently found innovative ways to support DREAM students and families, from hosting virtual workout fundraisers during the pandemic to sponsoring REAL Kids teams (complete with surprise ice cream truck visits). Their team members regularly volunteer at DREAM's End-of-Year Food Distribution, and they've created unique opportunities for DREAM students – including featuring our Legends at their investor conference and providing internships that expose students to careers in finance.

The partnership continues to deepen through OIC's leadership engagement with Zhao Yang, Managing Director and General Counsel, serving on DREAM's Ambassadors Board, and their ongoing commitment to every volunteer initiative. Through individual and corporate giving combined with matched employee donations, OIC demonstrates how a mission-aligned partnership can grow from grassroots support into long-term impact.
